Lot's of massage therapists are not going to like me for this...

I smelt "hocus pocus" the moment I heard my tutor in my Sports Massage lesson "Sports massage flushes out all the toxins in your body"....what the hell does he mean by flushing and toxins? First what do you mean by toxins? And flush it out where? Why? In-fact...I wrote a few pages about "flushing out Toxins" in my coursework, and endlessly had to repeat it to tick the boxes. I felt like a fraud as i was preaching something i just did not believe in. I looked into this claim...and just like I expected its BS and it's time we take this "toxins" claim to the bin.

Here’s the thing: the concept of "flushing out toxins" via massage is not supported by science. While massage can feel incredibly relieving and has benefits for pain relief, relaxation, and circulation, it doesn’t actually detoxify the body in the way many people think. First, let’s talk about how the body actually removes toxins. The human body is remarkably efficient at detoxifying itself through organs like the liver, kidneys, and lymphatic system. These organs process and filter out waste products from your bloodstream and help keep your internal systems functioning smoothly. When you drink water, eat a balanced diet, and stay active, these organs do their job without any outside intervention.

  • The liver metabolizes and filters toxins from the blood.

  • The kidneys filter out waste and excess substances (like salt or sugar) through urine.

  • The lymphatic system helps transport waste products from tissues and organs, which is later excreted through urine, sweat, and exhalation.

In short, your body is fully capable of detoxifying itself. There’s no need for massage to "flush" out anything Now ill be honest with you here...i needed to research this and here is what i found. Lactic Acid Is Not a Toxin....Bro...

One of the most common claims about massage flushing out toxins is that it helps remove lactic acid after exercise. Lactic acid is often blamed for muscle soreness, but it’s not actually a "toxin."

  • Lactic acid is produced when your muscles need energy but can’t get enough oxygen. It’s a natural byproduct of metabolism.

  • It’s not harmful — in fact, lactate (what lactic acid becomes after it’s metabolized) can actually be used by the body for energy during prolonged exercise.

  • Your body removes it naturally within about an hour after exercise. So, there’s no need for a massage to clear it out — the body does it on its own.

Okay....so i was right...it's BS.. but I wanted to look if there where any studies that proved it was not BS.

Nope...no evidence. So I looked a bit more and had a look if AI could hunt the infinite database and not even AI found any evidence. Detoxing is marketing claims..it is not science

So next time your therapist says "Yeh well, massage will flush the toxins out...." leave and come over to my room in Saffron Walden for some simple, effective and no jargon Sports Massage. www.apexrecoveryroom.co.uk
