What Even Is A "Knot" - Saffron Walden Massage.

“Knots” aren’t literally little tied-up lumps in the muscle, but the feeling is real.

  • Not actual knots – Muscles don’t tie themselves up like rope.

  • Trigger points – What people call “knots” are usually trigger points: small, sensitive spots in muscle fibers where they’ve shortened and aren’t relaxing properly.

  • Taut bands – These areas feel harder, ropey, or lumpy compared to surrounding tissue.

  • Restricted blood flow – Tight areas may have less oxygen and nutrient supply, which contributes to soreness and stiffness.

  • Nerve sensitivity – Trigger points can send pain to other areas (referred pain), which makes them feel even worse.

Why they form – Stress, overuse, poor posture, dehydration, and lack of movement can all contribute. However, what they are is actually a different topic all together.

What is interesting about “knots” (trigger points) is that

  • A single trigger point can “refer pain” somewhere completely different from where it is.

    • For example: a knot in your upper back can give you what feels like a tension headache in your temple or behind your eye.

    • A trigger point in your glute can make you think you’ve got sciatica, because it sends pain down the leg.
